Which type of extender should I use?

The choice among medium, long or extra-long term extender depends on the customers’ needs, the number of weekly deliveries to farms and distance to the insemination centre. Magapor offers a wide range of extenders adapted to the needs of any customer, being Duragen the most advisable product, as it preserves full seminal quality for a long time.

How can I prevent contamination?

In principle, adopting the following preventive measures should be enough:

1. Use disposable material when possible (glasses, gloves, filters etc).

2. Trim periodically boars’ preputial hair.

3. Use the double glove technique for collection.

4. Never collect the pre-spermatic fraction.

5.  Collect problematic boars at the end of the day to prevent cross contamination.

6. Clean the room after each use and boar pens at least once a week.

7. Always wash reusable material with neutral detergent and then with distilled water.

8. Sterilise all materials that allow it at 120º for 2 hours.

9 Clean the laboratory daily.

10. Drive through the circuits of machines and peristaltic pumps everyday and in this sequence: a solution of detergent, distilled water, 70º alcohol and, before use, distilled water again.

In conclusion, following some basic norms on hygiene and disinfection is the best way to prevent contamination.

Which is the maximum percentage of abnormal forms that should be allowed in an ejaculate?

In Magapor we consider a percentage of 25% as the maximum level of abnormal forms that should be allowed; nevertheless we should take into account the type of spermatic anomaly found, as not all of them are equally important. Thus, bent tails are considered serious malformations, as they hinder the progressive movement of spermatozoa and therefore its ascent through the female genital tract. On the other hand, there also exist malformations of scarce importance, as distal cytoplasmatic droplets.

Where does contamination come from?

In principle and unfortunately, it may come from anywhere; nevertheless it usually comes from the boar and is due to bad praxis. Semen contains bacteria that come from the genital and/or urinary tracts and accumulate in the preputial diverticulum. However, if we discard the pre-spermatic fraction of the ejaculate and use extenders containing antibiotics, we should not worry about this.

Occasionally contamination is related to pathological processes as infections of the testicles, prostate, bladder or urethra.

It may also be originated by the centre staff, drinking or laboratory water, foodstuff or bed of the boar, ventilation systems during dose processing, etc.

Which function do extenders have?

Semen extenders permit the storage of seminal doses and guarantee the same quality that presents and ejaculate.

They constitute a means with physical-chemical characteristics similar to semen: PH, osmolality, nutrients, besides antibiotics, to keep spermatozoa alive, motile and in the necessary physiological conditions to succeed in fecundation.

Magapor extenders are prepared to preserve seminal doses at a temperature of 15º, optimum for boar semen.
